National Certificate Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3)

Take your first steps towards teacher training

The National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3) is an introduction to the education and care of young children. It provides a foundation for employment and further studies in this area.

The programme is designed for people wishing to become early childhood educators, for parents, potential parents or any adult caring for young people.

The qualification includes a selection of unit standards from the fields of health, children and play, understanding parenting, child development and professional studies.

This course can be a stepping stone to the Level 5 National Certificate and will enable students to grow in confidence and knowledge. At the completion of this course students may apply for entry into the Level 5 National Certificate thus enabling them to continue towards the goal of becoming a qualified early childhood teacher.

Entry Requirements

  • Be a minimum age of 16 years old and have three years secondary education (NCEA1) or be 20 years or over
  • Be interviewed
  • Complete a Ministry of Justice check**
  • Produce a statement of personal interest in the qualification
  • Supply two confidential referee reports
  • Students for whom English is a second language must also have an IELTS score of 5.5 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.0, or equivalent.

Provisional Entry

Provisional Entry may be granted to applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed and are able to show they are well prepared to study the programme.

**International students are required to obtain a police certificate from their country of origin.
